(September 2016 - Januar 2018)

Between the opening of the ZKR - Center for Art and Public Space in September 2016 and the departure from Schloss Biesdorf on January 31, 2018, the ZKR presented three highly acclaimed group exhibitions: Project Landscape, Between Spaces and Shifting Perspectives featured numerous internationally renowned artists. Together with our cooperation partners, including the Kunstarchiv Beeskow, the Brandenburg State Museum for Modern Art (BLmK), the ARCH + Architecture Forum, various Berlin universities, and the Marzahn-Hellersdorf Youth Art School, we were able to present about 120 events such as guided tours, artist talks and lectures, film screenings, or workshops in Schloss Biesdorf.

As a cultural project of the Grün Berlin GmbH, it has always been our concern to illuminate and question intersections of art and current topics of public space. On January 31, 2018, Grün Berlin GmbH left the previous location of the ZKR and handed over the operation of Schloss Biesdorf back to the district of Marzahn-Hellersdorf. This act ended the initial phase of the ZKR, whose concept is to be continued at various locations in Berlin in the future.

These pages provide an overview of the numerous activities of the ZKR during this period.

Concept

The ZKR – Centre for Art and Public Space Schloss Biesdorf is dedicated to examining the complex interplay between landscape, urban development and art. As a cultural project of the publicly-owned Grün Berlin GmbH, the ZKR displays art in both an urban and an environmental context, showing temporary exhibitions by international contemporary artists in dialogue with artistic positions from the former GDR. These exhibitions will be accompanied by regular artist’s talks, lectures and concerts, and will reflect current debates in the field.

How do works of art in public space change our perception of the environment? What questions did artists in the GDR pursue - and how are the perceived today? And where are the interfaces between urban and landscape development and artistic productivity? Art in public space, in a sense, enchants viewers to pause and look around. The ZKR also wants to contribute to a re-examination of the familiar: In our exhibitions, events and projects, we focus on the immediate surroundings and distant places, on central squares and remote corners, on current discussions and sometimes little noticed artist positions. The combination of art in the GDR with contemporary positions also intends to promote an unbiased debate about art and artists with a GDR-related background. The development of sustainable cooperation and networks is initial part of the self-conception of the ZKR. Together with our partners, we want to shape relevant social discourses, to raise awareness of the interaction between art, public space, landscape and urban development, and to allow one's gaze to wander into the past as well as into the future.
